The history of
Ca'solare neighborhood house
Originally the rural building was on the road, via del Pilastro. On the farm wheat, alfalfa, hemp, beetroot, a few vines were grown (wine was made) and some fruit trees, apples, pears, cherries, peaches and apricots. In the Stable there were 16 cows, then there was the chicken coop with 30 hens.
From 1885 Paolo Villani's father went to live here, with 5 children, 3 boys and two girls.
One of the two sons, Oreste Villani began to be a farmer and in 1929, destroyed the old house and rebuilt it.
Oreste Villani also had 4 children, 3 girls and a boy, Olimpo born in 1940, who still tells the story of this farm today.
It starts from the construction finished in 1930 of the goods sorting of the State Railways - Italian Railway Network which was the second in Europe in terms of size and handling of goods, ranging from the Pillar to Castenaso. (occupied 1,500 people)
The farm which was historically 35 turns with the construction of the San Donato railway sorting became 25 turns, in Bologna one turning corresponded to 2080.44 square meters.
In 1944 the sorting during the war became a war objective and was bombed, two bombs also fell on the farm creating 25 holes, and the stable was also hit which had 4 posts on the left and 3 posts on the right. It could house a total of 14 cows.
The stable was rebuilt and narrowed down so that 3 stalls remained to house 6 cows. The milk from the cows during the war and also in the following years helped many families to feed the children and the elderly, in times of greatest difficulty for food supplies.
In 1944, given the risks they ran with the bombings, the Villanis left the house, tightly closed, and moved to friends in the countryside at Mezzolara di Budrio, until the end of the war on 25 April 1945.
They returned to the farm in 1946, after having rearranged it a bit and continued to cultivate wheat, alfalfa, hemp, beetroot, a few vines and some fruit trees, apples, pears, cherries, peaches and apricots.
In 1992, the Villani farm closed its business. The farm through the legacy of benefactors to the Municipality of Bologna. The Municipality left the farm to the Villani family on loan for use until 2002, in the meantime the transformation of the agricultural farm into an Arboretum Park began.
